Brush Portraits Most artists paint with brushes, but Alexandra Dillon paints on brushes, transforming old and worn artist’s brushes into charming portraits of imaginary people. Realized with an eye for character and a subtle humor, these small works are much more than just a clever use of discarded objects. They burst with personality and when grouped, or in pairs, create curious relationships that make us wonder about their inner lives. “I grabbed the burned brushes” says Dillon, who contributes thirteen small portraits.

“All that was left” 9’’ x 12’’ Birchwood painted red with 2 pieces of debris. I often find beauty in damaged fragments of things. I was attracted to the glass shard and the piece of charred material, using them to create a simple abstract design. “Temptation” 6’’ x 4’’ x 12’’ Sculpture. Charred airbrush mounted on stone. I grabbed Flavio’s defunct airbrush, and immediately saw it as some sort of hellish manifestation. The snake of temptation that lures us, but warns of the effects of our choices. “Aftermath” 30’’ x 41’’ Charred red wood, hanging by chain with teardrops - I was attracted to the red remnant of a table, just the way it was. I added the teardrop glass beads to represent both dripping water after the fire, as well as tears.
“Don’t want to be an alarmist…but” 30’’ x 3’’ Charred wood with mounted fire alarm and metal tag. It was serendipity. I had already chosen some burnt wood fragments from Flavio’s studio when a friend who knew nothing about the upcoming “Palimpsest” show came over and gave me some things he was weeding out of his collection of stuff. Amongst them was a fire alarm. Coincidence? I say not. Ironic? Yes. Had to do this piece using it. “I still burn for you” 32’’ x 2’’ Charred wood with Swarovski stones. Honestly, I could take a piece of fire-damaged wood and hang it on my wall. I took it a step further by adding fiery red Swarovski crystals to emulate the tiny embers that surely remained right after the fire. “What did you do to fall so far from grace?” 24’’ x 48’’ Charred frame with broken mirror and burnt angels w/painted panel . Growing up in a Catholic household clearly skewed me towards seeing the items from the fire, as spiritual symbols. I reconstructed a baroque mirror frame with its “fallen angels” and used the broken mirror to reveal the heavens that are now beyond from which the unfortunate cherubim.

My work comes out of things I find, I inherit,  what is discovered in the precise moment when it becomes absolutely necessary... .And that is how it comes alive! Blessing a sacred moment. I like to trust what simply happens and to be fully awake to recognize it.

"So Nice To Talk Again" was constructed from the original painting "Let's Talk". In this piece, I've tried to represent, from left to right, the chaos of the fire, the aftermath of the studio itself, and then the inspirational regrowth that includes a print of the original peaking through a window naturally burnt through by the fire. A testament to the resilience of plants and animals.

These pieces symbolize the transformation of our perspective and sense of identity, with the unfolding of experiences and time. The Astrology charts in these works are calculated for the day of the fire, and the day of the final reception at FAB Gallery. I incorporated Tarot archetypes that correspond with the Astrological emphasis in each chart. The chart for the day of the fire reflects the story of 'Death'/The Phoenix (Scorpio), who, through destruction, is reborn into a new form- and rises again from the ashes. The chart for the day of the final reception is characterized by 'The Star' (Aquarius), which is a metaphor for having evolved into a transcending form- both receiving and giving powerful inspiration to others. “Thank you again for the inspiration, and for all of the hospitality and generosity you show toward your friends! I look forward to many more celebrations of new life and creativity together!”

"Using the effects of "live motion scanning" I created a techno mosaic and pulled a virtual elasticity from each charred object that could reveal its inevitable warped value. By further manipulating these damaged items- not physically, the fire had all ready done that - but digitally, we search for the intangibles of perceived wealth, identity and currency in the cyber world."

The larger one represents the moment during a “tragedy” where you are faced with a choice to either surrender to the chaos or resist it. If you allow it in, the tragedy can fertilize your new ground and inform the fabric of your becoming. The four smaller pieces represent moving from the ashes, looking within, connecting with your creative essence and rebuilding from there. All mixed media elements were from Flavio’s studio. Sub-straights used were fresh panels and one canvas. My process in creating these pieces began with picking pieces from Flavio’s studio that I was attracted to. These elements sat quietly in my studio until the whispers of what wanted to be created spoke out.
